emerson hammond.8strings7covers1voice0permission ep (october2018)

emerson hammond’s debut release. see liner notes and d/l art down below after the songs.

these trax are ripped as 320kbps .mp3 files.

these days (9.8mb) is a cover of an underappreciated joy division song.

norwegian wood (john has a sad because he doesn’t get any) (5.7mb) is a cover of a very appreciated beatles song.

brain dead (4.5mb) is a cover of a song that my band in the late ’90s and early 2000s, skeptictank, recorded and performed.

atmosphere (12.3mb) is a cover of a very appreciated joy division song.

a portrait of the artist as a not-so-young manic depressive (7.4mb) is a song that i recorded with my band during high school, the phlegmatics, and then self-released as 1761 as “a portrait of the artist as a young manic depressive”. I added the “not-so-” to the title and wrote lyrics to it this year.

vulnerability (4.1mb) is one of my favorite operation ivy songs.

last night i dreamt that somebody loved me (mozzer has a sad because he doesn’t get any) (14.5mb) is a cover of a smiths song, but i cut off the ambient bit at the beginning and dove right into the main part and turned it into a funky 4-piece workout that i’ve had going through my head since the ’80s.

bonus instrumental versions:

these days (instrumental) (9.8mb) uses vibes for the vox line.

norwegian wood (instrumental) (5.8mb) uses koto for the vox line.

atmosphere (instrumental) (12.1mb) uses my new 8-string bass fed through a pitch shifter for the vox line. PLEASE CLICK ON THE LINK FOR THIS ONE. the audio player keeps choosing the wrong file for some stupid reason.

a portrait of the artist as a not-so-young manic depressive (instrumental) (7.5mb) uses good ol’ “cheesemaster 5000” hammond organ for the vox line.

last night i dreamt that somebody loved me (instrumental) (14.5mb) uses my 8-string fed through a distortion pedal for the vox line.

from the liner notes:

“in early 2018 i bought a lefty no-name electric guitar that had been retrofitted with a custom bridge and modified nut to create a mandocello. i liked it, but i wasn’t crazy about the typical mandocello tuning (4 courses of 2 strings tuned in unison, with the typical 7 halfstep spread between courses). as is my wont, i further modified it (southpaws have to do such things a lot) so that it would become an 8-string bass. it’s tuned to G-C-F-B♭, 3 halfsteps higher than a typical 4-string, with octave strings on each course. i love the way it sounds now, and i hope you will too. please to enjoy!

“this ep features covers of 2 joy division songs, a beatles song, an operation ivy song, and a smiths song. it also features a song that i wrote and played with my band skeptictank during the late ’90s (brain dead) and another that i wrote and played with my band the phlegmatics (self-released as 1761) during and shortly after high school (a portrait of the artist as a young manic depressive, although it was originally instrumental and i added the lyrics and extended the title this year).

“it also includes instrumental versions of 5 of the 7 covers, because i wish more bands would do that.

“i’m not asking for money for this ep, since as the title of this release suggests, i haven’t tried to ask for permission for clearance. please feel free to share these covers, but also please don’t charge others for them, and if you want to use it for something, please contact me first. thank you, won’t we?”
